Hundreds of Denmark
/ Herreder i Danmark
In the period preceding the Municipal Reform
(Kommunalreformen) of
1970 -
- Denmark was divided into around
170
hundreds (Danish: herred, plural:
herreder).
In the timeframe
1793 through
1970, each
parish
(sogn) -
- was functioning as a municipality
(en
kommune) -
- within their respective hundreds
(herreder).
The hundreds (herrederne)
were in turn part of a county
(amt).
This was changed in
1970, when
the parishes
(sognene)
were merged -
- into
larger municipalities
(kommuner) -
- sometimes crossing hundred borders
(herredsgrænser)
-
- and the hundreds
(herrederne) fell out of administrative use.
Today, hundreds
(herreder) are used mostly for purposes of
genealogy research.
